Avis de décès de Rev. -John-Young Elliott


McLEAN, Va. -- Clergy John Young Elliott, 83, died in his home in McLean, Va., on June 8, 2005, after a long battle with cancer. He served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., from 1963 until 1974. In addition, he led American Baptist congregations in Rochester, N.Y.; Wickford, R.I.; Lambertville, N.J.; and Mount Royal, N.J. He moved to McLean after his retirement in 1987.The Rev. Elliott was known for his dogged devotion to the cause of peace.He served his country as a conscientious objector in World War II, working as a firefighter in the west, as an attendant in a mental institution outside of Philadelphia and as a guinea pig on a hepatitis experiment at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He continued that resolve by counseling potential conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War and working for decades with many local and national organizations dedicated to the cause of peace. He is the author of numerous articles and the book, “Your Pastor has an Outside Job.” He served for many years as a trustee of The Divinity School (Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Bexley Hall and Crozer Theological Seminary).Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of John Wesley Elliott, former president of Alderson Broadus College in West Virginia and Grace Young Elliott. He received his undergraduate degree in English from Haverford College and his masters degree in sacred theology from Temple University.In 1948 he married Clara Dunfee who predeceased him in February 2005. He is survived by his children, Martha J. H. Elliott, a television producer and author, of Santa Barbara, Calif., Susan Marsh Elliott of McLean, a career Foreign Service officer and John Dunfee Elliott of McLean; four grandchildren, Hadley Cornell, Kurt Mitman, Hannah Cornell and James Cornell.Since moving to McLean, he had been an active member of McLean Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, on the missions board and several other committees.Funeral arrangements were handled by Money and King of Vienna.Services were held on June 13 at the McLean Baptist Church.
