Rev. Francis J. Hurley, CSC EASTON The Rev. Francis J. Hurley, C.S.C., 82, died peacefully at Falmouth Hospital, Jan. 22, 2010, following a battle with cancer. He was born May 18, 1927, in Waltham, a son of Michael and Mary (Sweeney) Hurley. After attending St. Marys High School in Waltham, he entered Our Lady of Holy Cross Seminary in North Easton. Following his Novitiate in North Dartmouth and profession of temporary vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross on Aug. 16, 1947, he attended the University of Notre Dame where he received his A.B. in 1949. After his final profession on Aug. 16, 1950, he studied at The Catholic University of America where he completed an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biology. He was ordained a priest on June 12, 1953. Fr. Hurley taught at Father Baker High School in Buffalo, N.Y., from 1954 to 1956 and at Stonehill College from 1960 to 2009. As a beloved faculty member and chair of the Biology Department, he oversaw the growth of the sciences at Stonehill and was instrumental in the decision to build the newly dedicated Thomas and Mary Shields Science Center. He mentored and befriended numerous colleagues and students. For many years, Fr. Hurley also assisted at St. Mary of the Nativity Parish in Scituate. Fr. Hurley is survived by his sister, Mary Burke of Clifton Park, N.Y.; his brother, Charles M. Hurley and his wife Helen of Long Meadow; and his sister, Margaret Vanderslice and her husband Thomas of Osterville and Naples, Fla., as well as 16 nephews and nieces and their families. Fr. Hurley had the pleasure of presiding at the weddings of all his siblings as well as the baptisms of all his nephews and nieces. His loss is also deeply felt by his very close friends, the Haughey Family and his many close friends within the Stonehill College community. Visitation was at the Chapel of Mary, on the campus of Stonehill College in North Easton, Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Chapel of Mary, Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery on the Stonehill College campus. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the Fr. Francis Hurley, C.S.C. Scholarship Fund at Stonehill College, North Easton, MA 02357.
