Mary Rebecca Alexander, formerly of Simpsonville, died in Greenwood.She was born in Greenwood, the daughter of the late Charles William Creighton and Lula Dickson Creighton, and the widow of Walter Clay Alexander.Mrs. Alexander was an honor graduate from Winthrop College with a double major in math and science. Later, she received an undergraduate and graduate degree from Appalachian State Teachers College in library science.Mrs. Alexander began her teaching career with Tamassee DAR School in Tamassee. After marrying Walter Clay Alexander, they lived in the Floyds community of Horry County, where she taught school at Floyds High School for twenty-five years. She was a very active member of Floyds United Methodist Church, where she played the piano and taught Sunday school.After moving to the Simpsonville area, Mrs. Alexander was a librarian at Wade Hampton High School and retired from Hillcrest Middle School.She was an active member of Simpsonville United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and played the piano. She was a member of the Douglas-Pallard Sunday School Class and Wesleyan Circle.She was a member of the Simpsonville Garden Club, Snow Campaign DAR Chapter, and a charter member of Alpha Gamma of Delta Kappa Gamma.She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and John Thompson; a stepgrandson, Joseph Thompson; and a step-great-granddaughter, Amelia Thompson; a sister, Kate Bentley; and a brother-in-law, M.O. Alexander.The funeral service will be at Simpsonville United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends an hour before the service in the breezeway of the church.She will be laid to rest beside her husband in a family service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.The family requests that all flowers be omitted. Memorials may be made to Tamassee DAR School, P.O. Box 8, Tamassee, SC 29686.She was predeceased by her parents, Charles William and Lula Creighton; her husband, Walter Clay Alexander; and her brothers Bill and Mitch Creighton.Fletcher Funeral Service
