BRATTLEBORO -- First United Methodist Church on Town Crier Drive was filled Wednesday morning for the funeral services conducted for Raymond “Ray” Williams.The service was co-officiated by Rev. John Daniels of First United Methodist Church and Rev. Robert Hanson of East Dover Baptist Church.Music for the service was under the direction of organist Carroll Wentworth who offered prelude hyrnns “Nearer My God to Thee,” “I Need Thee Every Hour,” “Whispering Hope” and “Just as I Am.”Rev. Daniels led the call to worship which was followed by scripture readings and the opening prayer.The scripture lesson from Psalm 121 was given by Rev. Hanson.The congregation joined in singing hymns, “Rock of Ages” and “Amazing Grace.”The life of Raymond Williams was chronicled by Rev. Daniels followed by a time of sharing. Several friends and co-workers of Mr. Williams offered tributes and reflections giving testimony to Mr. Williams as a man who deeply loved his family, especially his children, one who valued friendships and also being a good listener and advisor. Several spoke of his kind nature and gentle spirit.The scripture lesson from II Corinthians 4:5-12,16-18 was read by Rev. Hanson followed by prayer.Rev. Daniels offered the message, speaking of Mr. Williams as a man loved by many, and one who was successful. Readings that followed included “The Measure of the Man” and “The Ship.”The closing hynn was “In the Garden.” Those attending the service joined in reciting the 23rd Psalm which was followed by the Pastoral Prayer.The service closed with the Benediction from Ephesians 3:14-21 and recessional hymns.A reception followed the service held in the church's fellowship area hosted by the Ladies of First United Methodist Church.Of the many attending the visiting hours and the funeral home and services, delegations included Price Chopper, Hannaford's, Putney Paper, Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Vt. and N.H. and Newfane Elementary School.Williams, 59, of Route 30, in Newfane, died suddenly Friday morning, March 19, 2004, at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend.Arrangements were under the direction of the ATAMANIUK FUNERAL HOME.
