RUTH ELIZABETH (GIROUARD) CARTER - BURLINGTON - Ruth Elizabeth (Girouard) Carter passed away Dec. 17, 2011, after a brief battle with cancer. She was born July 4, 1937, in Burlington, the eldest child of Lawrence and Ruth (Prim) Girouard. She grew up in Colchester, where she helped to take care of her younger sister and brothers. She married Norman Carter in 1957, and raised their children in Burlington. She worked for many years at St. Michael's College, from where she eventually retired. Ruth was very involved in the Salvation Army and was a member of the Senior Center and Home League. She loved rummage sales, Yahtzee, traveling and countless other activities. But most of all, Ruth was devoted to her family and close friends. She is survived by her children, Harry Carter of Burlington, Laurie and Robin Turner of St. Petersburg, and Chris and Linda Carter of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Levi, Shawn, Charlie, Drew and Alec Carter, and Misty Phelps; and six great-grandchildren. She also leaves her siblings, Joan Globe, Roy, Jim, Stanley and Bobby Girouard. She was predeceased by her son, William; and two brothers, Lawrence and Dale. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on June 22, 2012, at Lakeview Cemetery, 455 North Ave., Burlington. A reception will follow immediately after at The Clover House, 471 Church Road, in Colchester. In lieu of flowers, you may bring a live plant, or make a donation to the Champlain Senior Center, 241 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington, VT 05408.
