Robert W. Keyes died April 5, 2010. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 2, 1921. He received the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Chicago in 1953. From 1953 to 1960 he was a staff member of the Westinghouse Research Laboratory in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where he conducted research on the properties of semiconductors under high hydrostatic pressure and many other aspects of solid-state physics. In 1960 he joined the IBM Research Laboratory in Yorktown Heights, NY and engaged in research and development activity in fields related to modern electronic technology. He has authored over two hundred publications in the engineering and scientific literature and was granted seven patents. Dr. Keyes was a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. In 1976 Dr. Keyes received the IEEE RG Baker Prize.For the past forty years Dr. Keyes lived with his wife Sophie in Yorktown, NY. Outside of work he enjoyed birdwatching, paddling a canoe, and hiking in the Hudson River Valley. In addition to his wife Sophie he is survived by his children Andrew and Claire.Visitation will be at the funeral home,Wednesday, April 7, 6 to 9PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11AM Thursday, April 8 at St. Theresa's Church, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.Interment will be private.
