Robert "Bob" Louis Langdon, Sr. of Warminster died peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children, on Monday, March 13 at his home after a long illness. He was 71. He was the beloved husband of Charldean Joyce Langdon for nearly 50 years. Born May 20, 1935 in Youngstown, OH, he was raised by his mother, the late Viola Hudson, and his stepfather, the late Wilbur Hudson. Bob served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the United States, Japan and Korea from 1953 to 1956, and received the National Defense Service Medal before his honorable discharge to the Army Reserves. After his discharge, he attended High Point College in High Point, NC, and graduated with a BS in Business Administration in 1960. He then began his lifelong career with the US Government, Department of the Treasury. From 1960 to 1966, Bob served in progressively responsible positions in several Financial Management Service Financial Centers and at their Headquarters Office. He was named Deputy Director of the San Francisco Financial Center in 1966, and later served as Deputy Director of the Chicago Financial Center from 1968 to 1970. From 1970 until his retirement in 1994, Bob served as the Regional Director of the Philadelphia Financial Center. He managed a workforce of 170 employees in processing claims and in the issuance of more than 200 million Government payments annually. He was known and respected as a manager who was effective and efficient in his position, while also fair, equitable and compassionate to all the employees under his direction. During his tenure as Director he received numerous Special Achievement Awards and Certificates. In 1973 Bob was instrumental in having the first prototype check wrapping system installed for mass production of signing and wrapping checks. With his direction some modifications were made to enhance the system's productivity, and the check wrapping systems went into mass production two years later for use in six Regional Financial Centers. Bob was the recipient of a Secretary of the Treasury's Annual Award in 1979 for designing and implementing a program of presorting Government checks which resulted in millions of dollars of annual savings to Treasury through reduced postage costs. Again in 1986, he received a Secretary of the Treasury's Annual Award for directing a special project to convert the entire Federal Government from the use of obsolete punched card checks to the new paper checks. This project resulted in annual savings of six million dollars. He was selected as a member of the Senior Executive Service in 1991. In his spare time, Bob especially enjoyed fishing, traveling to visit family and friends, and closely following the news. In his retirement years, he enjoyed cooking, learning new computer programs and games, and regularly gathering with friends and former coworkers. He will be sadly missed as a gentle and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Surviving with his wife are a son, Robert Louis Langdon, Jr. of Danboro, PA; a daughter, Lisa Marie Backelman and her husband, Michael, and grandchildren, Joshua, Mitchell, Noah and Jennifer of New City, NY. He is also survived by his sisters, Carole Brown of Canfield, OH; Doris Jackson of Umatilla, FL; Wilma Evans of Lake Milton, OH; his brother, David Hudson of Youngstown, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Anne Langdon, who died in 1966; and a brother, Wilbur Hudson, who died in 1987. A celebration of his life was held Sunday, March 18, at Horsham Friends Meeting House in Horsham, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob's name may be made to Fox Chase Cancer Center at 333 Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111, ATT: Institutional Advancement or to Hadassah for cancer research at 900 N. Route 45, New City, NY 10956.
