Rita M. Smith AmsterdamRita M. Smith, 90, of Amsterdam, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital. She was of the Roman Catholic faith and a lifelong, devoted member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. Born on August 28, 1922 to the late Joseph W. and Mary E. Sawatka Rogers, Rita enjoyed a long career as a secretary at The General Electric Company in Schenectady, until her retirement in 1988. Throughout her career, and following retirement, Rita was a participant in, and frequent traveler with, the General Electric Women's Club. Rita also loved to spend time reading and visiting with friends and family. Rita enjoyed her home and yard, each of which she tended to into her later years. Rita will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Rita is survived by her niece, Louise (Rogers) Little; nephews, Mark Rogers, Kevin Rogers, Sean Cole, and Paul Smith; and her great-niece, Gail Thorpe. Several other great-nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased not only by her parents, but also by her brothers, William Rogers (Marion) and Joseph Rogers (Veronica); and a sister, Anne Cole (Richard). Rita was also predeceased by a niece, Janet Smith. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010. A calling period will take place in the chapel of St. Mary's from 8 to 9 a.m. A spring interment will take place at St. Mary's cemetery with the date and time to be announced.
