SMITH, Phyllis (nee Ahl) Phyllis was born December 18th, 1930 and passed away with family by her side in Saskatoon on Monday, April 30th, 2012 at the age of 81 years. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Esther Ahl; husband, Matthew Smith; brother, Marvin Ahl; sister-in- law, Eleanor; brothers, Stan Ahl, Edmond Ahl, Gerald Ahl, Larry Ahl; and her son-in-law, Rob Chapman. Phyllis is survived and lovingly remembered by her six children: Rick (Karen) Smith of Regina, Brian Smith, Karen (Dennis) Slater, Brenda Smith (Brad Phelps), all of Saskatoon, Cheryl (Oran) Cronk of Kitchner, Ontario, and Wendy Burlock (Rob Litterick) of Calgary, Alberta; grandchildren: Carly (Mike), Devon (Deb), Bruce, Jarret, Amy, Brianne, Sarah, Lindsey, and Shanaia; great- grandchildren: Carter, Catience, Sadie, Preston, Elise; brothers: Al (Carol), Ken (Grace); sister-in-law Fran Ahl; nieces, nephews and many friends. Phyllis had a career as a psychiatric nurse and worked at the Indian Hospital in Fort QuAppelle and at the Calder Centre in Saskatoon for many years; however, her most treasured career was as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family was of the utmost importance to Phyllis, and she was always there for her husband and children with her unconditional love and support. Another of Phyllis' talents was as a gardener which was passed down from her mother Esther. She had a true green thumb and her gardens were legendary; everyone always went home happy with a bag of delicious fruit or vegetables whenever they paid a visit. Phyllis also had a great love of dancing and spent many pleasurable hours kicking up her heels with friends. In fact, Phyllis was still dancing at least three times a week while battling pancreatic cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. The doctors told her she was an amazing woman-which is something we all knew-and encouraged her to "keep doing what she was doing" because it was working. One of Phyllis' fondest memories of the past few years was the family reunion we held in the summer of 2011 in Saskatoon. She thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of her children, their wives and husbands, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren all in one place at the same time. She marvelled at the sheer number of us, and laughed as she remarked-"you mean I'm responsible for all of this?" Mom will be greatly missed and always remembered as the rock of the family, and as a very loving, caring woman who touched many people during her life. Funeral services will be held on at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5th, at 11 a.m. at Windsor Chapel, 704 Windsor Street (corner of 8th Ave. N and Windsor Street). Flowers are most gratefully declined.
