->WINTHROP -- Phyllis M. Smith, 82, of Bearce Road died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at her home.She was born in Augusta on Oct. 4, 1925, the daughter of Lawrence W. and Leah B. Kenney.Phyllis graduated as salutatorian from Winthrop High School, class of 1943. Following graduation, she worked for the state of Maine for 10 years. She married Leon E. Smith, an employee of the Augusta post office, in 1948 and spent 11 years living in East Monmouth. They bought Averill Farm Ice Cream and moved to Vassalboro in 1969, running the business with her husband, Leon, for 10 years. In 1979, they retired and built their home in Winthrop. They traveled extensively throughout the United States in a camper trailer, visiting every state in the contiguous United States, Alaska and all the Canadian provinces. Phyllis was a member of Winthrop Grange for 67 years, and for many years was a member of the Squire Town Squares.She was predeceased by her husband, Leon E. Smith, on Sept. 13, 2007; and her brother, Paul A. Kenney, on May 15, 2007.She is survived by and will be sadly missed by her son and his wife, L. Kenney and Mary Smith, of West Gardiner; two daughters and their husbands, Penny and Tom Ruksznis, of Sidney, and Laurel and Michael Bowie, of Winthrop; six grandchildren, Corey and Morgan Smith, Craig and Amanda Ruksznis, and Ryan and Kristen Conrad; her sister-in-law, Shirley Kenney, of East Winthrop; as well as several cousins.There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in the spring.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HealthReach Hospice, P.O.
