Phyllis M. Smith September 5, 1918 - July 7, 2009 CHARLESTON, SC. - Phyllis M. Smith, 90, gracious mother, lady and friend, passed away peacefully at the Hospice Center of Charleston, SC on Tuesday, July 7, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Gen. Norman W. Smith. Born Sept. 5, 1918 in Tessier, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of the late Martin James and Ida Lee Oxley. She was predeceased by her brother Kenneth Oxley of Cranston, RI, son Col. Robert Smith and daughter Norma Bond. She is survived by sons Donald W. and wife Sally Smith, Norman W. and wife Nancy Smith, Keith L. and wife Miranda Smith and Barbara (Good) Smith. Also numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Phyllis lived in Woodstock, CT. for many years, moving to Woodstock in 1950 with her family. She moved to Charleston, SC in 2007 to be closer to her "Southern Family". Phyllis's life was enriched by many dear friends who contributed to a life filled with beauty, understanding, fun, faith and cultural enrichment. We, as surviving family, are grateful for everything that everyone, past and present, has contributed to a life well lived. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church of Pomfret, CT., where a memorial service for Phyllis will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009.
