PHYLLIS EDWINA BRADFORD-SMITH MILLER BEACH-GARY, IN / CRESTWOOD, IL Phyllis Edwina Bradford-Smith, age 80, of Miller Beach-Gary, IN and Crestwood, IL, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008 at home with family. Raised in her English heritage by her parents who moved to America early in their marriage, she was a classically trained ballerina, privately tutored from the age of 4. She modeled and was a professional ballerina in New York City on Broadway beginning at age 15 in her first show "Seven Lively Arts" and returned home after 7 years to be with her ailing father. Her loves were dancing, poetry, the ocean, and animals but her greatest love of all was family and children. She raised her children in the Miller section of Gary with her first husband, Jerome T. Bradford, and later moved to southwest Chicago where she met her husband of 29 years, John "Jack" Smith. Throughout Phyllis' life she gave of herself selflessly, the true essence of mother and nurturer and testament to Christian faith, both privately and professionally including serving the Catholic organization for many years helping countless others as a sponsor and teacher and as a nursing home Activities Director. Phyllis is survived by her husband, John "Jack" Smith; daughter, Jacqueline Mary Bradford and husband Dominic of Miller, IN; son, Jerome Michael Bradford of IL, daughter, Victoria Bradford of IL; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents: William and Mable Brown of Sunderland, England; friend and first husband, Jerome T. Bradford of Miller, IN; son, William Bradford of MI; and son, Thomas Bradford. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at St. Mary of the Lake Church, 6060 Miller Ave., Gary, IN. The family will receive friends Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the Mass service at 11:00 a.m. Phyllis will be immensely loved and missed. Kuiper Funeral Home (219) 923-7800.
