SMITH Phyllis Cole Smith, age 86, wife of the late Earl J. Smith of Stratford, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, March 28, 2011, with her three children by her side. Born in Montague, Mass., Phyllis resided in Milford for 37 years and in Stratford for 20 years. She worked as an administrative assistant at U.S. Electrical Motors in Milford for 22 years, retiring in 1986. She was an active member of the USEM Retiree's Club. Phyllis was a lover of people, nature, cooking, travel, music and the arts, and of life. She was an avid gardener and member of the Oronoque Garden Club; former long-time member of the Golden Hill Methodist Church choir and member of the First Congregational Church of Stratford; active member of the Milford Women's Club; and a member of the Oronoque Doll-Crafters group, making hand-made dolls for underprivileged children. She also enjoyed many years as a bridge club member. She was predeceased by her first husband, Lawrence R. Cole and a brother, Robert Johnson. Survivors include a son, Gregory Cole and wife, Louise of Milford; a son, Rodney Cole and wife, Peggy of Wallingford; and a daughter, Wendy Mawhinney and husband, Richard of Trumbull; as well as three grandchildren, -Amy Cole, Aaron Cole, and Taylor Mawhinney. Also a sister, Carolyn Pesotini and husband, Oscar of Milford and several nieces and nephews. Three step-children include, Kenneth Smith and wife, Deborah, Gary Smith and wife, Susan, Cheryl Minto, as well as four step-grandchildren, Gary Smith Jr., Fred Smith, Daniel Minto, and Cory Smith. A service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, at the First Congregational Church of Stratford, 2301 Main St., Stratford, CT.
