WILLIAMSVILLE -- Philip Victor Morin, 74, of Sunset Lake Road, died early Wednesday morning, Aug. 16, 2006, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, with his loving family by his side following a courageous battle with cancer. He had been a resident of Williamsville for the past 16 years. Mr. Morin was born in Haydenville, Mass., on June 27, 1932, the son of Joseph and Eugenia (Joslyn) Morin. He was raised and educated in Haydenville and was a graduate of Williamsburg High School, Class of 1950.He went on to attend Northampton (Mass.) Commercial College and American International College in Springfield, Mass., where he received his BA in Business Administration and Management. In June 1983, he earned the Casualty Claim Law Associates Degree from the American Educational Institute.A veteran of the Korean War, he proudly served his country in U.S. Navy as a naval corpsman with the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated from the Hospital Corps School in Bainbridge, Md., on Nov. 1, 1951. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds he received in the Battle of the Hook, as well as the Navy Achievement Medal and Navy Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged from active service on March 14, 1955.Mr. Morin had a long and distinguished career in the insurance industry and prior to his retirement in 1993 was an officer with the Windham Insurance Agency in Brattleboro.Previously he was an officer of Management Recruiters of Windham County in Brattleboro, served as large commercial accounts division manager for the New Hampshire Group in Valley Forge, Pa., and worked as a medical malpractice underwriting manager with the St. Paul Insurance Co. in Holyoke, Mass.He was a lifetime member and a past commander of VFW Carl M. Dessaint Post 1034 in Brattleboro, held membership in the American Legion, Brattleboro Post 5, the Marine Corps League, Brattleboro Detachment 798, and was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 236 in Haydenville.With his many active years of service with the VFW and American Legion, he was featured guest speaker at many Memorial Day and other commemorative and veteran related events.Active civically, he was a former selectman for the towns of Williamsburg and Chesterfield, Mass., and a former member of the Newfane Conservation Commission.Mr. Morin was a founding member of Vermonters For Clean Air and A Strong Economy, was a proud member of the National Rifle Association and was a former communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Haydenville.He coached Little League baseball in the Seattle area, and Babe Ruth and Legion baseball in Haydenville. He enjoyed sports, golf, was an avid hunter and fly fisherman, loved to putter around his home and go antiquing throughout the tri-state area. He also cherished time shared with his family and friends. Throughout the years, he was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan.He was first married to Joyce Ann Clark, on May 7, 1960. The marriage ended in divorce. He later married Joyce Van Hall, in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., on April 23, 1988.Besides his wife of 18 years he leaves one daughter, Janice Nye and her husband Thomas of Chesterfield, Mass.; two sons; Philip V. Morin Jr. and his wife Bethanne of Cummington, Mass., and Bryan J. Morin of Dalton, Mass.; a stepson, Geoffrey Busby of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, Donald Morin of Greenfield, Mass., and William Morin of Hinsdale, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Morin, and a sister, Norma Blanchette.The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Haydenville. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Mary's Parish Cemetery in the Leeds section of Northampton.Friends are invited to call at the Childs Funeral Home, 7 South Main St., Haydenville, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Visiting hours in Brattleboro will be on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace St.Memorial contributions in Mr. Morin's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to David's House, P.O. Box 660, Lebanon, NH 03766.Arrangements are jointly under the direction of the ATAMANIUK FUNERAL HOME and CHILDS FUNERAL HOME in Haydenville.u
