Col. Philip Arthur Davis, USMC (Ret.)SOUTH MIAMI, FL - Colonel Philip Arthur Davis, USMC (Ret.), 90, of South Miami, FL passed peacefully on March 26, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.He was born on August 7, 1922 in Chicago, IL to Philip Lester and Kathleen Henry Davis. Philip attended Regis High School and Regis College in Denver, CO; Georgetown University School of Foreign Service (BS) and the Catholic University of America (MA), Washington DC.He served in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years with tours of duty in the South Pacific and China during World War II; the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict. He was decorated with the Purple Heart for a wound sustained in World War II in the retaking of Guam with the 6th Marine Division and the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Vietnam. During his military career he was stationed in Parris Island, SC; MCB Quantico, Quantico, VA, MCB Camp LeJeune in Jacksonville, NC, the Marine Corps Air Station in Edenton, NC, Henderson Hall in Washington, DC, the Naval War College in Norfolk, VA, Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, GA, as well as overseas in Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan.Philip is survived by his former wife, Virginia Worgull Davis, who he married in 1948 on the Quantico, VA Marine Corps Base where he was stationed as a lieutenant and Virginia was stationed as a lieutenant in the WAVES Division of the US Navy. Philip is also survived by their six children: Philip Davis and his wife, Cindy, of Phoenix, AZ; Joseph Davis and his wife, Deirdre Moore, of Morristown, NJ ; John Davis of Poughkeepsie, NY; Thomas Davis of Poughkeepsie, NY; Kathleen Davis of Staatsburg, NY and Rosemary Davis of Pawling, NY.Philip later remarried and is survived by his wife Evelyn Rivera Davis of South Miami, FL and their four children: Carla and her husband Darin Cash of Lubbock, TX ; Arturo Davis and his wife, Jessica; Paul Davis and his wife, Annie; and Edward Davis, all of South Miami, FL.Philip is also survived by ten grandchildren, Philip K. Davis, Georgia Meckes, Maureen and James Benson, Michael Davis, Isabella and Adrian Davis, Evan and Colin Cash and Luis Davis; and great-grandson, Gideon Meckes.After retirement from the US Marine Corps, he spent ten years as the Director of The Chamber of Commerce for the City of Coral Gables, FL. He then went on to serve as the Contract Administrator for the Aviation Department of Miami-Dade County at the Miami International Airport. When he retired from civilian employment, he volunteered in the Guardian Ad Litem Program for the Department of Social Services in Miami and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Miami, FL.Philip was a devout Catholic and a life-long participant in church choirs and other parish activities. His musical interests included playing the piano, and he encouraged his children to study musical instruments. He also was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing golf with his children.His wake was held March 27, 2013 at Stanfill Funeral Home in Pinecrest, FL. A Mass of the Resurrection was held March 28, 2013 at Church of the Epiphany in Coral Gables, FL. A military burial service was held March 29, 2013 at the South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth, FL, his final resting place.
