FITCHBURG -- Peter L. McCollum, 85, of Fitchburg, died Friday, Nov. 2, in the Golden Living Center.He was born in Fitchburg on Feb. 6, 1927 a son of the late James A. and Maria A. (Morand) McCollum and has lived here all of his life.In 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII.Mr. McCollum was a firefighter for the City of Fitchburg for 32 years prior to his retirement in 1988. For most of his career he was a pump operator on Engine Company 2. He severed as president and vice president of the Fitchburg Firefighters Relief Association and was the secretary and treasurer of the Firefighter Benefit Club as well.In 1970 he started doing maintenance at the Fitchburg Art Museum and continued part time for 36 years retiring in 2006. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and also a life member of the South Fitchburg Social Club. Peter also volunteered for several years as a little league coach in the Fitchburg Northern League. He was also an avid golfer and golfed all over New England and Florida as well.He leaves his wife of 64 years, Irene (Lemieux) McCollum of Fitchburg; a daughter, Patricia Espie of Fitchburg; a son Thomas McCollum of Methuen; a sister, Elaine Bernard of Leominster; two grandchildren, Matthew Espie and Kristen Espie-Bilodeau, two great-grandsons, Bexley Bilodeau and Christopher Espie and several nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by three brothers, Roy McCollum, Harold McCollum and James McCollum; six sisters, Louise Dufort, Dorothy Poudrier, Gladys Plourde, Claire Boutotte, Mildred Bilodeau and Rita McCollum and a great-grandson, Alexander Espie.MCCOLLUM -- The funeral will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, from the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM in St. Camillus de Lellis Church, 333 Mechanic St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 5 to 7 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Fitchburg Firefighters Relief Association, 33 North St., Fitchburg, MA 01420 or to the Fitchburg Art Museum, 25 Merriam Pkwy., Fitchburg, MA 01420.
