Peggy Joyce SmithIn the early hours of Friday, December 26, 2003, the world grew a little dimmer. On that morning, Peggy Smith went home to be with the Lord. Somehow the world lost a little of its luster with her passing, because the first thing you noticed about Peggy was that sunny, friendly smile and wonderful personality. She was a loving, kind soul. She loved the Lord. That gentle spirit was a reflection of Him in her. She loved her children. She loved her grandchildren. She loved her family and friends. She embraced everyone in friendliness, never meeting strangers. Even in illness, that smile was ever present.Peggy was born in Oconee County, Georgia, May 12, 1939. Her precious mother, Beatrice Johnson Thrasher, preceded her in death. She was partly raised by her loving grandmother, Mrs. Nellie Johnson, who also preceded her in death. She spent her early childhood days in Oconee County; moving to Athens with her family in her early teens. She joined Bethel Baptist Church at an early age. She was a 1957 graduate of Athens High and Industrial School. She married Frank Smith at a young age and became the proud mother of three fine sons. She spent 30 years working at GoldKist Corporation, where she eventually moved up to the position of USDA Inspector. She was one of the first blacks to hold that position; retiring after 30 years with this firm. We praise God for her life and we are so thankful that the Lord blessed us with her presence in our lives. We praise God for the years we had her in our midst. And, though the world seems a little dimmer without her, we take comfort in knowing that her illness has now ended, her troubles are now over and, her joy is now everlasting. We know that those who die Christ are not lost to us, because we know where they are. We know, without a doubt, where Peggy is. And, we know, in heaven she is smiling. - Peggy leaves behind to cherish her memory three sons, Frank Jr., Ricky and Curtis Smith, all of Athens, Georgia; a grandson raised in the home; Elrico Smith of New York and 9 other grandchildren; her brother, Bobby (Sherry) Thrasher; her cousin, Nancy Peak of Cincinnati, Ohio, with whom she grew up like a sister, a devoted aunt, Elise Robinson, an uncle, Swept F. (Ida) Johnson, a devoted goddaughter, Jacquelyn Smith Johnson and a loving cousin, Hazel Daniel. She also leaves a special friend, her previous husband, Frank A. Smith, 5 sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Bethel Baptist Church, Watkinsville with the Rev. Terry Willoughby officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 12 p.m. Interment will be in Watkinsville City Cemetery.Jackson-McWhorter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. 543-3623.Please sign our Obituary Guest Book at www.onlineathens.com.Athens Banner-Herald, Thursday, Jan. 1, 2003
