LEXINGTON - Bennett Peggy Buckley, formerly of Shreveport, LA, died peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital on December 9, 2013. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, William R. Bennett. Brought up in Louisville, she was the daughter of the late Milton Nicol Buckley and Cecile Irene Payne. Peggy was a graduate of J.M. Atherton High School for Girls and a member of Crescent Hill Methodist Church in Louisville. She graduated from the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Eta Sigma Phi national honorary society. After marrying, she moved to several communities in Louisiana, following her husband's career with the Bell System but always participating in hospital volunteer work. She was president of the Volunteer Guild at Schumpert Medical Center in Shreveport, LA, and was appointed to the position of Director of Volunteers. She added several services, including a volunteer group for men and management of a successful gift shop, before retiring in 1984. She belonged to East Ridge Country Club where she and her husband enjoyed many couples' events. She is survived by her daughter Rebecca Bennett Byers and husband H. James Byers, her grandchildren Elizabeth Bennett Crow of Lexington and Matthew Nicol Crow of Denver, CO and stepgrandchildren James Byers and Zachary Byers of Bethesda, MD; her son William Reece Bennett Jr. and wife Penny Wilson Bennett, and grandchildren Hannah Wilson Bennett and Jack Champe Bennett, all of Lafayette, LA. Peggy will be interred at a later date in the historic Frankfort Cemetery in Frankfort, KY. Kerr Brothers-Harrodsburg Road is in charge of arrangements.
