STATESBORO - Pauline Smith Lee, age 98, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at her daughter's home in Charleston, S.C. She was born January 6, 1910, in what was then Ft. Stewart, Ga. She was one of three children born to Fred and Eller Smith. She was married in 1932 to Emmett "Buzz" Lee and together they operated a general store and farm on Highway 24 and Clito Road for many years. Buzz and Pauline had three children that died in infancy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buzz Lee; her daughter, Sara Simmons; her grandsons, Benjamin H. Simmons, Emit Earl Niles; her brother, Peyton Smith; her sister, Mary Smith; three nephews, George Payne, Bobby Smith and Peyton Smith Jr. Surviving are two daughters, Blondine Miller (John) of Richmond, Va., and Ramona Lee Niles (Henry "Hank" Sr.) of Charleston, S.C. Grandchildren include Sara's children, Randall V. Simmons, Richard E. Simmons, Pate Rae; Blondine's children, Paulette Abernathy, Joseph E. Miller; and Ramona's children, Anthony Shane Niles, Shawnna Niles Moye, Henry T. Niles Jr., Vicky N. Karnehm and Lisa Gayle Kuypers; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. Her relatives on the Smith side include four nieces, Frieda Bacon, Wilhelmia Tuten, Gayle Summerford and Sue Helmly; two nephews, Fred Payne and Wendall Smith. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Eller and the Rev. Will Griffith officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Hodges-Moore Funeral Home of Statesboro is in charge of the arrangements.
