April 16, 2009 Patricia Mills Barclay Smith, 88, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009, at the Loretto Cunningham Residence facility surrounded by family and friends. Pat, affectionately known as "The Warden" by her family, was born in Ottawa, Canada, and moved to the Syracuse area at a young age, where she resided for most of her life. A graduate of Vocational High School, she was retired from Hutchings Psychiatric Center, where she was employed as a secretary, and from Chappell's Department Store. Much of her life was centered on her family and friends. She had a great compassion for giving to others in time of need and was always there to provide selfless support and assistance. Pat was a very social and active person who loved to entertain her friends. She thoroughly enjoyed playing golf, and a game of bridge was always something to which she eagerly looked forward. Pat was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. Pat was predeceased by her husbands, Harold E. Barclay and John H. Smith; a grandson, Timothy P. Barclay; as well as her sisters, Eileen Ashmore, Fran Mooney and brother, Neil Mills. She is survived by her son, Peter M. (Mary Beth) Barclay; granddaughter, Jennifer A. Barclay of Boston MA; grandsons, Jeffrey M. Barclay of Denver, CO, and Peter T. Barclay of Syracuse; as well as several nieces and nephews. A special note of thanks from Pat's family to her nieces Theresa and Patricia Ashmore, who in their aunt's image gave so much to her care during the last six years of her life, and to the staff on the 6th floor of the Loretto Cunningham Facility for the excellent and compassionate care extended to her during her stay. Services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave., and 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Church. Burial will be in Onondaga Valley Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Pat's name to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of CNY, 1027 E. Genesee St. Syracuse, NY 13210.
