Waterford - Patricia G. Ryan of Waterford, passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 10, 2011.Born in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1925, she was the daughter of Eugene and Rose (Shanahan) McHugh of Ireland.She married George G. Ryan on April 28, 1945, at St. Benedict's Church in the Bronx. For the next 17 years, she traveled the United States as a Navy wife before settling in Fort Trumbull, New London, in 1962.Pat Ryan took pride in her community through her dedication and service to St. Joseph Parish where she served as a catechism teacher, Eucharistic minister, a member of the Parish Council, and the Confraternity of Christian Women. In addition, she volunteered her services to Catholic Charities, the New London Community Meal Center, and the Waterford Historical Society. One of her most notable achievements was being a founding member of the Waterford Senior Citizen Commission for which she was honored by Senator Lowell Weicker in 1986. She also served as a Justice of the Peace for the State Of Connecticut for many years.After raising a family of seven children, Pat returned to work. Her career began in 1980 when she was hired as a teacher's aide for the Waterford public schools. After 23 years of service to her students, she retired from Cohanzie Elementary School. She was asked to continue helping children at St. Joseph's, St. Mary's, and Southwest schools. Pat believed that education is a key that opens many doors. At the age of 74, Pat fullled a life-long dream of attending college and obtained her associate's degree from Mohegan Community College. Mrs. Ryan is survived by her daughter, Patricia Brady and husband, Thomas, of Schenectady, N.Y., daughter, Kathryn Patterson and husband, Michael, daughter, Marian Brown and husband, James, son, Eugene Ryan and wife, Robin, daughter, Teresa Ryan and husband, John Strecker, and son, John Ryan and wife, Holly, all of Waterford. She will be greatly missed by her 13 grandchildren, Michael Brady and wife, Michelle, Kara Brady, Thomas and Nora Patterson, Nolan, Patrick, and Emma Brown, Mack and Jack Ryan, Quinn, Tallah, and Murphy Ryan, Aislinn Strecker; and great-grandson, Declan Brady. She is also survived by her sister, Catherine Quinn of New London; sisters-in law, Alice McHugh and Helen Ryan; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, George G. Ryan; her son, George A. Ryan; her brother, Eugene McHugh; her sister, Marion Sullivan; and cousin, Marion McCauley.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at St. Joseph Church, Montauk Ave., New London. Interment will follow at Jordan Cemetery in Waterford. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at The Thomas L.
