Patricia E. Crandall, 86, of Concord, formerly of Lincoln, died Thursday, October 13, 2011 in Concord. Born in 1924, in Chicago, IL, Pat and grew up in Belmont, MA. She sang in church choir, and in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas at Belmont High, and played the violin in the high school orchestra. Pat graduated from Colby Junior College, New London, NH, in 1943. She worked as a secretary at the Boston Herald, and at the MIT Radar School, during World War II. She also sang with the Chorus Pro Musica and the Handel and Hayden Society. In 1948, Pat met Steve Crandall, an MIT assistant professor applying for a Fulbright fellowship to teach at Imperial College, London. Nine months later, the two were married. A Friday wedding was quickly followed by a flight to London, in time for Steve to teach on Monday morning. During their first year abroad, the two explored the English and Scottish countryside, by train and bicycle. On their return, Pat helped survey land in Lincoln, where the Crandalls built their home and lived for 56 years. Steve took the family with him on several teaching sabbaticals. Pat and Steve lived in Les Lecques, France, for six months with their two young children, Bill and Jane, in 1960. Following that trip, Pat helped organize English language classes for the wives of foreign students at MIT. The family spent a school year in California, and a summer each in New Mexico and Mexico City. In the 1980s, Pat worked as office manager for the Chorus Pro Musica, and also accompanied Steve on several international academic trips. When the kids left for college, Pat returned to school, graduating from Harvard in 1985 with a B.A. in archeology. In 1986, Pat joined a dig in Yorkshire, England, to help study English life during the Roman Empire. Pat volunteered with many groups, including the League of Women Voters, the First Parish Church in Lincoln, the PTA, the MIT Womens League, the Garden and Travel Clubs. She played drums for the Tabor Hill Jazz Band and the Jazz-a-Belles. After guiding tours of Boston Symphony Hall for many years, she co-authored the Boston Symphony Tour Guide Manual and was instrumental in organizing the Ancient Instruments display. Pat was genuinely interested in everyone she met, was a loving and supportive mother, with a lively sense of the ridiculous, and never short of fresh ideas for family adventures. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Stephen H. Crandall of Concord, formerly of Lincoln, her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Peter Kontrimas of Westwood, her son, William BC Crandall of Redwood City, California, and her grandson, Stephen Kontrimas of Westwood. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 19th at 2 p.m. in the First Parish Church in Lincoln, 14 Bedford Road, Lincoln. Contributions in her memory may be made to First Parish in Lincoln, or to Symphony Hall, BSO Friends Office, 301 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA 02115, or their on-line contribution tab labeled in memory of.
