OTTO H. MEIER - SHELBURNE - Otto H. Meier died unexpectedly on Nov. 1, 2011. Otto was born in New York City on Sept. 20, 1933, the son of Otto and Hertha Meier. He grew up in Woodridge, N.J., where he graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1955 as a mechanical engineer. His first job was with Bendix that same year in Utica, N.Y., which started his entire career in the defense industry. In 1964 he spent six months in the U.S. Army Reserves where he was then honorably discharged. In 1967 he and his family moved to Vermont to accept a job with General Electric Aerospace in Burlington. After 31 years of dedicated employment he retired in 1998, from what was then Lockheed Martin, as their Director of Engineering. Otto enjoyed an active retirement. He was an avid traveler, hunter, skier, birdwatcher, canoeist and golfer. He always said it was a bad year if he didn't play golf at least 100 times in a season. He is survived by his son, Otto and wife, Mary Jane, of Londonderry, N.H.; daughter, Tracy and her partner, Patrick Cook, of South Burlington; twin sister, Tiny Nulty and husband, William, of Orange Park, Fla.; and cherished friend and global travel partner, Sally Rice of Burlington. He was a wonderful man who will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In respecting his wishes, there will be no formal service. His family and some close friends will set his cremated remains adrift at a special place where the cries of hawks and loons herald their welcome.
