MARTIN, Mrs. Olivia McArthur Watts, 74, who earned a life-long reputa-tion for community service and helping others, died Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. A life-long resident of Wilcox Coun-ty, Mrs. Martin, affectionately known to everyone as ""Miss Olivia,"" was born October 9, 1930. She grew up near Camden in the Grampian Hills and attended ele-mentary school at the Coy School. A 1948 graduate of Wilcox County High School, Mrs. Martin later graduated from Gulf Park College in Gulfport, Mississippi. Mrs. Martin's enthusiasm and love of life began at an early age and she carried that tradition through-out life through involvement in civic affairs and helping others. Mrs. Mar-tin's contributions to her community and her civic and political activities are too numerous to enumerate. She was a 50-year member of the United Daughters of the Confedera-cy Charter Chapter #36, serving on numerous state UDC committees and as Chapter secretary for many years. A 50-year member, she was Chapter Chairman of American His-tory Month and past Regent of the Lt. Joseph M. Wilcox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolu-tion. An original founder of the Wil-cox Historical Society, she helped preserve and restore the Wilcox Fe-male Institute. She was also an ac-tive member of the local, state, and national Republican Party. Although well-known for her civic contributions and willingness to serve and help others, Mrs. Martin's generosity has helped many more individuals anonymously, accord-ing to a friend. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents, Carl McClurkin Watts and Olivia McArthur Watts, and daughter Mary Winifred Martin. She is survived by her husband Ralph Winfred Martin Jr.; three chil-dren Olivia Watts Martin of Mont-gomery, Carla McClurkin Martin of New York, and Ralph Winfred Mar-tin III and his wife Catherine Cromer of Camden; and two grandchil-dren Olivia Winifred Gill and Joseph McArthur Gill of Montgomery. Visitation was held Monday, April 25, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Camden United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The graveside serv-ice will be Tuesday, April 26, at 10 a.m. at the Camden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Margaret McArthur Green-Olivia McArthur Watts Martin Scholarship Fund with the United Methodist Chil-dren's Home in Selma.
