SMITH, Nellie VictoriaSeptember 27, 1947 – June 19, 2016 Nellie Smith, 68, of Calgary, AB, passed away June 19, 2016 in Calgary, Alberta. Nellie was born in Didsbury, Alberta to Mildred and Victor Olson on September 27, 1947. She went to high school at Coronation High School and graduated in 1965. Nellie earned her Bachelor of Education at U of C and went on to teach and tutor mathematics, her subject of true passion. Many students, friends, and family members will remember how Nellie helped make a positive difference in their education and most importantly, made learning fun. While teaching in Spruce Grove, she invented a game called Math Challenge, which students enjoyed enormously. It was modeled on the TV show Reach for The Top. She introduced this game and learning concept at Saint Michael''s University School in Victoria. It was highly successful. Her kind heart, sparkly personality, love and laughter touched all who knew her. When she wasn''t busy helping others, Nellie enjoyed cooking, reading, dancing and spending time with her family. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents Mildred and Victor, stepsister Peggy, and son Craig. Nellie is survived by her sister Annie Loades, brother Larry Ryan, stepbrothers Bill (Joan) and Ken (Barbara) Rogers, son Michael (Becky), daughter Susan (Steve) and six grandchildren, Ronin, Quinn, Angus, Ethan, Emma and Sophie. As per Nellie''s wishes, there will be no funeral service, however, a celebration of life will be held at a future date and notice will be given. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Nellie Smith, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
