NELLIE (PENNY) SMITH May 5, 1922 - December 16, 2012 Nellie (Penny) Smith passed away on December 16th, 2012, at the BMP hospital due to complications from a fall. Her daughters were at her side. Penny was born in London, England, the daughter of Daisy Evelyn Grover (Wheeler) and Arthur William Grover. Penny survived the London Blitz of WWII and served her nation during the War in the Women’s Land Army. She was the proud recipient of the Women’s Land Army Medal. In 1948, Penny made the brave decision to leave everyone and everything she knew and loved and immigrated to her new home in Canada where she started a new life in Philipsburg, Quebec. There she met her husband, Gordon Harold (Harry) Smith, who predeceased her in 1988. Penny was an active member of the Ladies Guild and St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Philipsburg. Several years after the death of her husband, Penny moved to Manoir Lake Brome in Knowlton where she enjoyed eight years of assisted living and discovered her passion for oil painting. Penny passed away in her 90th year with her three daughters at her side. She leaves to mourn: her daughters, Janet Smith-Hubbard (Tom), Judith Smith-Draper (Lionel), Jennifer Smith and her fiance Miles, granddaughters Tara Draper-Stumm (Edward), Lesley Anne Draper, sister Marie Grover-Carr (Arthur), her nieces and nephews, and her angel care giver Lisa Kirby. Penny was a loving wife and a devoted mother. Her strength has been an inspiration to her daughters and she will be profoundly missed but always lovingly remembered.
