Avis de décès de Neils-Sofus-Johnson Jr

Neils Sofus Johnson Jr., 92 SOUTH PORTLAND -- Neils Sofus Johnson Jr., 92, born on Feb. 13, 1922, in Portland, passed peacefully from complications from a stroke. He was married to Dorothy Davis Johnson for 34 years, who died on July 14, 1983. Neils was the only child of Neils and Annie Johnson and grew up on their 80 acre vegetable farm on Pleasant Hill Road in Scarborough. This farmland is currently in the process of being preserved by the Scarborough Land Trust. Deciding not to follow in his father's footsteps as a farmer, Neils went to work as an accountant for the Portland Pipeline Corps in 1941. After participating in WWII for three years in the Army Signal Corps in Europe, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and receiving the Bronze Star for valor, he returned to the Pipeline after the war. He spent 35+ years in its employment and eventually became assistant treasurer. In addition to his vocation, Neils was active in St. Lawrence Congregational Church on Munjoy Hill as treasurer, Sunday School teacher, and keeping the building in repair. He was a dedicated bowler on a company team at the Big 20 in Scarborough. He became an avid train buff, working on Lionel model trains with his sons in the attic of their home at 662 Highland Ave. in So. Portland. For almost 30 years he was editor of a local monthly railroad newsletter called 'The 470' which is circulated all over the world. He also enjoyed traveling the U.S. extensively by train. Neils is survived by his two sons, Ronald and his wife Colleen who live in So. Portland, and Bradley and his wife Kathy who live in Acton, Mass.; as well as six grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at First Evangelical Free Church, 355 Bridgton Rd., in Westbrook, on Saturday, Sept. 6. Visiting hour is at 1 p.m., followed by a service at 2 p.m. and a reception afterward. A private graveside service is scheduled in the morning. Arrangements were made by the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. For online condolences please visit www.hobbsfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either First Evangelical Free Church or Scarborough Land Trust. Neils Sofus Johnson Jr.
