MATTHEWS, Neil George (aka Smiley) May 12, 1948 -July 20, 2009 It is with unimaginable sadness that we announce the passing of Neil George Matthews. On July 20, 2009 with his family at his side, Neil passed away at the St. Catharines General Hospital, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Cherished partner of Suzanne Grant a godsend, proud father to George Matthews (Linda), Steve Matthews (Jennifer), his two boys made him very proud. Grandfather to Hunter Ann and his special little buddy Hayden. Brother to Randy Matthews, and a Son to Emmelene Dalgleish, but a friend to all that knew him. Neil was predeceased by his father George B. Matthews and his step father Harvey R. Dalgleish. Born and raised in Niagara-on-the -Lake, Neil was an exemplary student at NDSS - “12 B's literary genius“ was noted in his yearbook. Neil then moved to St.Catharines when he married, this brought him two children who he adored. A parts man at heart, Neil worked at Performance Cars for over 30 years, before moving on to several other dealers in the area. His love of the British Motor industry and it's products could be seen throughout his home. Nothing made Neil happier than to drive hi MGB on a twisted road with the roof down. Also an avid reader and used book and record collector, Neil adored his grandchildren, taking them on hikes and making them endure processed cheese sandwiches. Neil will be sadly missed by all that knew him. He was a great friend, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and son. We are all better for having known him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Society. A memorial Service to celebrate Neil's Life will be held at Club LaSalle on Wednesday July 29th form 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. 111 Arthur Street, St. Cathairnes. A private interment will take place at the Lakeshore Road Cemetery N.O.T.L. on a later date.
