Norman Ray Edwards, 84, of Fort Myers, FL passed away with his wife by his side on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Hope Hospice. He was born on December 7, 1925 in Columbus, IN, a child of Leonard O. and Erma D. (Park) Edwards Johnson. Norman received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Indiana University in 1948. While attending Indiana University, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi social fraternity. He left Indiana University for two years to serve his country in the Army during World War II. He had a great passion for public accounting, and was a member of the American and Indiana Associations of Certified Public Accountants. He was Controller for Vernco Corporation from 1948 to 1952, a partner in Crouse and Edwards (CPA's) from 1952 to 1968 and Executive Vice President and Director of Finance for Vernco Corporation from 1968 until he retired after the purchase of Vernco by Emerson Electric. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Columbus, and served as an elder, trustee and treasurer of the First Christian Church of Columbus. Norman was a member of the Columbus Kiwanis Club and the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce and he was a Board member of the Retirement Foundation. He also was active in the Columbus Jaycees and the Boy Scouts. Following his retirement, he moved to Ft. Myers, FL where he was a member and served as an Elder, Chairman of the Board, Treasurer, Capital Campaign Director, Small Group Leader and Pastoral Advisor at the First Christian Church. Norman also served on the Founding Board of Christian Campus Fellowship at Florida Gulf Coast University, as a Trustee of Florida Christian College and a member of the Forest Golf and Country Club, Fort Myers. Norman was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who loved his family without reservation and gave of himself without hesitation. Never one to complain (except for an occasional missed par putt on the golf course) or speak harshly of others, he will be most remembered for his warm and kind smile, his deep compassion for others, his strong character and the incredible grace by which he lived his life. He will be desperately missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Betty, his daughter, Debbie (Van) Culpepper, his son, Mark(Martha) Edwards, his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Chris, Emily and William, his great grandchildren, Isabella and Tessa, ten nieces and nephews and his sister, Judy (Jim) Vogel. He is also survived by Betty's children, Jerry (Faye) Biggerstaff, Anne (John) Tilley, Denny Biggerstaff and their 7 children, as well as Luce, his beloved Maltese. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, L. P. Edwards, his sister, Betty Schaerges and his first wife of 48 years, Joan Robinson Edwards. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the kind and compassionate caregivers at Healthpark Medical Center and Hope Hospice. A celebration of Norman's life will be held on his birthday, December 7, 2010 at 11:30 AM in the First Christian Church, 2061 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33901-3416 where the family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to either the above named church or Florida Christian Church, 1011 Bill Beck Blvd., Kissimmee, FL 34744.
