Fleming, Myrtle Butts, age 86, of Boca Raton, Florida passed away June 12, 2005 at Boca Raton Community Hospital. Born June 25, 1918, in Mount Dora, Florida, to the pioneer family of Natalie (Swanson) and August H. Butts, she grew up in Fort Lauderdale where she graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School. She graduated from Florida State College for Women, now Florida State University where she joined Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and attended Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1939, she married Thomas F. Fleming, Jr. in Oakland, California and settled in Boca Raton in 1942. Mrs. Fleming was a devoted mother to her three children, Tom, Marilyn (deceased), and Janet, and wife who gave generously of her time and effort to her community. She was instrumental in establishing the public library and the Art Guild (now the Boca Raton Museum of Art). She was on the first board of the Debbie Rand Association, the Music Guild at FAU, the Garden Club, and the Singing Pines Museum. She was a founding member and honorary trustee of the Boca Raton Historical Society where the highest award, the Myrtle Butts Fleming Award, is bestowed annually for outstanding public service. She was named a Legend of Boca Raton and was inducted into the Walk of Recognition. She was a member of the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club and the Women's Club of RPYC. She was staunchly interested in the direction of Boca Raton's development and never hesitated in speaking out on the city's behalf. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Boca Raton. Mrs. Fleming traveled extensively thoughout the world spreading her amazing "joie de vivre" wherever she went. She loved nature as well, especially shells, flowers, and birds. Her gracious manner and quiet elegance was matched only by her modesty. Surviving her are her son, Thomas F. Fleming III, of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; daughter, Janet B. Fleming, of Jupiter, Florida; three grandchildren, Chase Fleming, Martin B. Fleming, and Andrea Fleming Zlanabitnig. She will be deeply missed by her family, many friends, and dear and loyal companion, Dorothy Mashburn. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 18, 2005 at Kraeer Funeral Home, 1353 N. Federal Highway in Boca Raton.
