Mrs. Ruth Virgene DuBois Hughes, age 70, passed away Wednesday at Carolina's Medical Center due to injuries sustained in a car accident. She was a native and lifelong resident of Pembroke. She was a member of the Advent Christian Church and served as a pianist for several churches. Mrs. Hughes was a former Pembroke City councilwoman serving over 10 years. She volunteered at the Pembroke Senior Center, often transported the elderly to doctor's appointments, and gave food, shelter and rest to those in need. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Mr. Robert "Bob" Hughes of Pembroke; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Norman Hughes of Statesboro, John Mark and Doris Hughes of Virginia, Duncan Lorian and Melissa Hughes of Clarksville, Ga.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Brenda and Dale Muterspaugh of Virginia and Robin Hughes of Virginia; three brothers, Gary, Clifton, and Thomas DuBois; one sister, Carolyn Sims; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 11 at the Morrison Memorial Chapel with Dr. Sidney Bradley, Elder Spencer Moore, and Pastor James Bulloch officiating. Burial will be in Northside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Advent Christian General Conference Mission Society, P.O. Box 690845, Charlotte, North Carolina 690848. Morrison Funeral Home of Pembroke is in charge of the arrangements.
