Monsignor Robert J. Harrington, 68, of Elizabeth, N.J., passed away on Friday, April 12, 2013, at Brother Bonaventure Care Center, Elizabeth. Visiting is Monday, April 15, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption R.C. Church, 155 Washington Ave., Elizabeth, followed by a Vigil Mass at 7:30 p.m. Visiting is Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, N.J. Harrington graduated from Bergen Catholic High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in classical languages from Immaculate Conception Seminary and a master's degree in religious studies from Fordham University. Msgr. Harrington was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1971, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark, N.J. He served as an associate pastor at Holy Trinity Church in Westfield, N.J., from 1972 to 1980. During that time he was the director for Family Life Ministries, director of Pro-Life Activities, and director of CYO Youth Ministries for the Archdiocese of Newark. He became pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Elizabeth in 1990, serving there almost until his death. He was singularly supportive of the Hispanic and Filipino ministries in the parish. His special activities included coordinator of the Newark Summer CYO Program, archdiocesan moderator for Catholic Girl Scouting, chaplain for Engaged Encounter, and a National Marriage Encounter Team priest. He was an instructor at Immaculate Conception Seminary and lecturer in family ministry. Father Harrington was named a papal chamberlain with the title of monsignor on Oct. 29, 1993, and was appointed dean of the City of Elizabeth in 1994. Predeceased by his parents, Robert J. and Helen Kelly Harrington, he is survived by two brothers, Thomas and Kevin, their spouses, Vicki and Cathy, and three nephews, Sean, Colin, and Jesse. He is also survived by many cousins and a loving extended family.
