GARDNER Millard Thomas Gardner III of San Diego, Calif. and Fairfield, passed away January 11, 2009 in San Diego. Born in Fairfield, to the late Millard Thomas Gardner Jr. and Leola Lyon Gardner, Tom (as he was known) graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School class of 1948. He entered Fort Schuyler Maritime College, received a Bachelor of Science degree and became an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Tom joined the regular Navy as a Lt J.G. and went to Pensacola Florida for flight training. After earning his wings he was sent aboard the attack carrier USS Lexington. Tom was assigned to the "Rough Raiders" squadron flying AD-6's, AD-7's and the AD Skyraider. Upon leaving the Navy he briefly became a helicopter pilot for PanAm before settling in San Diego and starting his own business in commercial real estate. Tom was predeceased by his son, Gregory, of San Francisco, California. Survivors include his sister, Leora Gardner Pixley of Fairfield; his nephew, Paul Gardner Pixley and fiance, Debora of New London, his nephew, Dale Peter Pixley and wife Ann, of Newtown; his uncle and aunt, Francis and Alice Lyon of Fairfield, and many cousins around the country. To honor his wishes, Tom was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea.
