<!-- FH = Cremation Services, Inc. -->MILDREDDOROTHYMCDOWELL SMITHMARS HILL - On December 21, Mildred Dorothy McDowell Smith went home to be with God. She was born January 17, 1935 to the late Ulysees and Doskey Anderson McDowell. Born the youngest of eight children, she was raised in Mars Hill, North Carolina where she attended Long Ridge School and was also a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Mildred attended Allen High School in Asheville, N.C. and graduated from St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, N.C. It was there she met her husband Z. Ned Smith, Jr. Mildred worked at Micro Switch in Mars Hill, taught in Edgecombe County Schools and retired from Asheville City Schools in 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Zeke Ned Smith Jr. and her son, Joel Anthony Smith. She is survived by a daughter, Deirdre N. Smith McNairy and a grand-daughter, Kendall N. McNairy. She leaves a loving legacy of nieces, nephews, friends and students whose lives she forever touched. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on January 14 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Mars Hill, North Carolina. Mildred wanted her flowers while she was alive so in lieu of flowers, gifts will be accepted at the State Employees Credit Union in the name of her grand-daughter.
