SMITH Mildred Livengood Allison Smith (94) died on Wednesday, July 18th at The Watermark in Southbury, CT, where she had been a resident since 2004. Mildred Livengood was born September 30, 1917 in Warrensburg, Missouri. She graduated from Kansas State Teacher's College in Emporia, Kansas with a Bachelor of Science in Education with a Library Certificate. She served one year as librarian of the Chanute Junior College in Chanute, Kansas. Years later she catalogued several of the elementary school libraries of the Fairfield, Connecticut School System before a librarian was hired. Mildred married Hugh Vincent Allison, son of a Methodist minister, on September 23, 1939. The couple moved to Fairfield in 1939 and became active in the Golden Hill United Methodist Church in Bridgeport. Mildred received a 70 year membership certificate in 2009. She worked for the church as a Pastoral Visitor and served as expense treasurer. She edited the newsletter for the Connecticut District of the United Methodist Women (UMW). She was a member of the Board of Directors of the United Methodist Homes of Connecticut, and the Fanny Crosby Home. She was on the steering committee for establishing an Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers unit in Bridgeport. During the summers when Mildred and Hugh were at their vacation home on Moosehead Lake in Maine, Mildred was active in the Peoples United Methodist Church in Greenville. Mildred enjoyed her volunteer work for numerous organizations, including the Girl Scouts. For several years the Allisons provided a Girl Scout day camp on their property in Fairfield-Camp Deerlea. Mildred served on the board of the Woodfield Children's Village on Stratfield Road in Bridgeport, and on the Fairfield Board of Education. She was a Meals on Wheels volunteer. Mildred was also a leader in the P.E. O. sisterhood. She was initiated into P.E.O. in 1955, when she became a Charter Initiate of Chapter H in Fairfield. Later she became a Charter Member of Chapter V in Trumbull. She held all local chapter offices and all state offices, presiding at the 1982 State Convention as the 23rd State President of P.E.O. of Connecticut. Mildred and Hugh Allison had six children-four daughters, and two sons. When Hugh died from complications of Parkinson's disease in August 1990, they had twelve grandchildren. In June 1993, Mildred married Wardley Blake Smith, a friend for over 50 years. Both Ward and Mildred had 50 years of marriage before losing their spouses, and then had 13 years together before Ward died in 2007. Mildred Allison Smith loved to travel. In her lifetime she visited six game and wildlife preserves in Africa and India; climbed the Great Wall of China and sailed the South Pacific Islands; traveled through the Panama Canal; saw Mount Kilimanjaro; fished in the Great Lakes, in Canada, in Alaska and in the Atlantic Ocean; and hiked part of the Appalachian Trail. After she was widowed twice and passed her 90th birthday, she took a Mississippi River trip with her daughter Dorothy, and a trip to the Baja Peninsula, Mexico with her son Stan. Other interests and activities included swimming, birding, gardening, reading, knitting, and cooking. Mildred is survived by her children: Gladys Allison Stokes of Seneca Falls, NY; Dorothy Allison Halsey of Natick, MA; Christine Allison (and Bob Knight) of Charlottesville, VA; Vivian Allison of Cooperstown, NY; Harold Allison (and Xiao Xiang Huang) of Newtown, CT; and Stanley Allison (and Patty Hite) of Seattle, WA. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 great-children; 3 step-daughters; 10 step-grandchildren, and 15 step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Mildred Allison Smith will be held at Golden Hill United Methodist Church in Bridgeport, Connecticut on Sunday, August 19th at 12 noon. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.
