Mildred L. (Rand) Starr, age 85, of Abington, formerly of Quincy, died Monday, November 19, 2012 at the Weymouth Healthcare Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Boston, raised and educated in Quincy schools and was a graduate of Quincy High School. She has lived in Abington for two years, previously in Quincy for most of her life. Following the untimely death of her late husband in 1962, Mildred worked and proudly raised her four children as a single mother. She was employed many years by the former South Shore National Bank where she worked in custodial services, retiring in 1998. She was also a volunteer for several years with the Probation Department at the Quincy District Court. Mildred enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, knitting and scratch tickets. She was devoted to her family and especially her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Beloved wife of the late Herbert J. Starr. Devoted mother of Jeffrey H. Starr, Deputy Chief, Q.F.D. and his wife Paula of Abington, Jacquelyn Higgins and her husband George of Abington, Herbert J. Starr and his wife Diane of Dunedin, FL and Michael W. Starr of Quincy. Loving grandmother of Jeffrey P. Starr, Jillian Starr Higgins, Michael A. Starr, Paula A. Starr and Haley R. Starr. Cherished great-grandmother of George, Ellie, Ava and Patrick. She was predeceased by her siblings: Emily Ahola, Emma Venhaus, Marion Rand, Allen Rand, Robert Rand, Margaret Duffy, Cynthia Thalin, and George Rand. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services was conducted at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Avenue, Quincy, Saturday, November 24, at 11 a.m. Chaplain Scott St. Louis of the Care Alternatives Hospice, Marlborough, will officiate. Visiting hours were at the funeral home Friday, Nov. 23, from 4 | 7 p.m. Interment Woodside Cemetery, Cohasset.
