Michael "Mike" Raymond Williams SPARTANBURG, SC-- Michael "Mike" Raymond Williams, 69, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Greenville Memorial Hospital after battling a long illness. Born October 21, 1943, in St. Louis, MO, he was the son of the late Raymond Evans and Kathleen Anne Paulson Williams of Minneapolis, MN. A U. S. Navy veteran, Mike was employed with Spartan Mills Corp. in management positions in Production Planning, Inventory Control & Sales, for 29 years until its closing. He later was one of the co-founders of Weavetex Corporation where he was vice president of Sales. For 40 years his church family at First Presbyterian in Spartanburg was central to his life. He served on the Board of Deacons and on numerous Diaconate committees. He was a former Sunday school teacher and Superintendent. Especially fond of young people, he was active with the youth program and mission trips, and was always surrounded by children whom he enjoyed making laugh. A lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and an Eagle Scout himself, he was active with Troop 2 at First Presbyterian Church. Community service was a core value and through the years he was on the City of Spartanburg Public Safety Committee, a Spartanburg Community Neighborhood Watch Program organizer, and Hillbrook Neighborhood Association President. He served on the Boards of The Spartanburg Irish Children's Program for Peace, Spartanburg Downtown Sertoma Club, National Accounting Association, and was a Leadership Spartanburg Alumni. His Vietnam War era service on the USS Rankin as a Naval Lieutenant was definitive to his experience, and he supported the USS Rankin Association throughout his life. He was a graduate of Winona State University of Winona, Minnesota and a Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity Alumnus. Survivors include his beloved wife of 44 years, Janis Mahaney Williams; daughter, Adrienne Williams; son, Michael Williams; grand-dog, Heartly; sister, Mrs. Mark Wilke (Sue); nephews, Matt and Nate Wilke of Beaver Dam, WI; sister, Ann Williams Haines; nieces, Kristy and Kari Haines of Minneapolis, MN; and a number of great nephews and nieces. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 9, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307, and following the service in the church parlor. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Evans and the Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur. Private entombment will be in First Presbyterian Church Columbarium later this fall. Memorials can be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Palmetto Council, 420 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306; or First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 393 E.
