MICHAEL P. SMITH - NORTH HERO - Michael P. Smith, 66, died peacefully on Monday evening, Aug. 4, 2014, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, with his loving family by his side. Michael was born on Aug. 5, 1947, in Hardwick. He graduated from Essex Junction High School in 1965, and went to work at IBM for the next 38 years, before becoming a Park Ranger for the State of Vermont, Department of Parks and Recreation. He presently was assigned to the Knight's Point State Park. Mike loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter all his life. He treasured his time in the woods and hunted all over Vermont, Maine, Pennsylvania and Canada with his best friend, Kenny Arms. His camp in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, next door to his friend, Bob Dragon, was his favorite spot, and "heartbreak ridge" was paradise for him. Mike was also a dog lover and his puppies, Sophie, Tank, Sam and Ollie, whom he raised with his partner, Sue, were very dear to him. Mike followed his love of the outdoors by becoming a VT State Park Ranger after his retirement from IBM in 2003, and spent 11 years as a Park Ranger at Lake Carmi, Molly Stark and Knight's Point State Park. He also spent several winters tending the ski lifts at Okemo. Another passion of Mike's were his vehicles, from his Chevelle 396 Super Sport, MGB, and Corvette, to his numerous trucks, motorcycles and 4-wheelers, and his current Chevy antique truck - if it had an engine, Mike loved it! Special thanks to Dr. Ades, Barb Segal and the nurses on Shepardson 4. Also thanks to Rob Peterson and the entire staff at Knight's Point State Park. Mike loved his job and considered the crew at the park "family." Mike is survived by his son, Jason and wife, Marcy, of Essex Junction; daughter, Heather Hayes and husband, Doug, of Middlesex; their mother, Bonnie of Grand Isle; grandchildren, Olivia, Landon, Isabella, Ireland, and Cole; sister, Linda McGettrick and husband, Mike, of Essex Junction; niece, Amy and her daughter, Ava; and nephew, Mark and wife, Jess, and their children, Max and Olive; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his partner, Sue Erbe, and their puppies, Sam and Ollie, of New Boston, N.H.; and hunting buddy and best friend, Kenny Arms and wife, Ginger, of Essex. He also leaves his friends and associates at Knight's Point State Park. Mike was predeceased by his parents, George and Fran Smith of South Hero. At Mike's request, there will not be any services at this time. Donations in Mike's memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, VT 05478. Online condolences may be made to www.minorfh.com.
