NEW BEDFORD -- Maurice Jacques, 89, of New Bedford, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the widower of Lena (Cloutier) Jacques. A lifelong resident of New Bedford, he was the son of the late Arthur and Florence (Bergeron) Jacques. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He was a maintenance worker for the Acushnet Company until he retired. A World War II Army veteran, he was a Tech 5th Grade. He was assigned to the Company B 592nd Engineers Shore Regiment. He served in the battles of New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, South Philippines and Luzon. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Distinguished Unit Badge GO 175 Hq 6 Army 45, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with four Bronze Service Stars. Mr. Jacques was a member of the VFW Poirier Post. He was a very handy craftsman and built several boats by himself as well as a pool table. He also did oil canvas paintings and enjoyed dancing and walking. Survivors include two daughters, Yvette Norcross of Clearwater, Fla. and Janet Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Armand Cournoyer; a sister, Lucille Barrett of Rochester, N.H.; his longtime companion, Lydia Martin of New Bedford; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Raymond Jacques. His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Arrangements are by Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.
