ROGERS, MARY WILLIA "CRICKET" ATWOOD, 93, one of the first Women in Kentucky to be licensed as an Embalmer and Funeral Director, died Sunday, December 31, 2006 at the North Hardin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Radcliff. The former Mary Willia Atwood was born in Sonora, the daughter of James and Davey Ann Corum Atwood and graduated from the Elizabethtown High School in 1932. Upon graduating from the Kentucky School of Embalming in Louisville in 1934, she worked with her father and brother- in-law, Logan Dixon at the Dixon-Atwood Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. In 1937 she married Lawrence H. Rogers of Vine Grove. During their nearly 70-year marriage, the couple lived in Glendale and Elizabethtown before moving to Magnolia in the early 1940s. Originally they co-owned the Dixon Funeral Home in Magnolia with R. Lee Dixon, who later sold his part of the firm to the Rogers'. It was then renamed the Dixon-Rogers Funeral Home. For many years the Rogers' provided emergency medical transportation to the people of LaRue and Hart Counties. Mrs. Rogers was an active advocate for the establishment of a professional ambulance service in LaRue County. In 1985, she was recognized by the Kentucky Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors for 50 years of service in that profession. She and her husband retired 10 years later at the age of 81. She maintained her licenses until 1998. While living in Glendale, Mrs. Rogers was a leader for the Gilead Baptist Church Baptist Young Persons' Union. She was a 59-year member of Chapter 376 of the Order of The Eastern Star in Magnolia and a longtime member of the Magnolia Baptist Church. The Rogers' were avid gardeners, pet lovers and for many years operated a Charolais cattle farm, The Minglewood, in Hart County. Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her daughters, Mary Lawrence Prather in 1988 and L. Ann Naser Wise in 2000; three sisters, her twin, Anna Laura Atwood, who died in infancy, Edna Philpott Cave and Eugenia Dixon, both of Elizabethtown; and a brother, Jesse D. Atwood of Elizabethtown. Survivors include her husband; four grandchildren, Larry Naser and his wife, Beverly of Brandenburg, Krista Prather Roberts and her husband Larry of Dacula, GA, Rebecca Naser of Lexington and Dannah Prather of Louisville; six great -grandchildren, Walt Roberts, Kevin Roberts, Charlie Naser, Laura Roberts, Abby Naser and Charlotte Naser; a niece and several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services are 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the Dixon-Rogers Funeral Home in Magnolia with Rev. Gary Talley and Dr. Grant Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Hardin Memorial Park in Elizabethtown. Visitation will begin after noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Rogers had requested that in lieu of flowers, gifts would be made in her memory supporting the Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children, PO Box 1429 Mt.
