Mary Robb Funk of Presidential Oaks in Concord died on Friday, March 11, at the age of 100.Mary was born in Philadelphia on August 25, 1910. She grew up in Philadelphia and Collingdale, Pennsylvania, and was a long-time member of the Tully Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sharon Hill. She had lived in Concord since 1995.Mary worked for many years at the John Wanamaker Department Store, starting as a 15-year-old trainee enrolled in the John Wanamaker Commercial Institute. During her 17-year career at Wanamaker's she rose from student and errand girl to become a buyer in the linens department. Mary cherished her memories of those years at Wanamaker's and loved to recall them later in life.Mary was married to Philip Funk, Sr., from 1940 until his death in 1976, and together they raised two sons.Mary was an active and athletic person, playing field hockey, basketball and running track during her teenage years. When her sons were growing up, she loved playing baseball with her boys in their back yard in Secane, Pennsylvania, and she was a stalwart and enthusiastic fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.Mary was beloved by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was a wonderful source of stories about what it was like to be a child growing up in the early part of the last century. She remembered the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 and the horrified reaction of her parents and other grown-ups, and she told a jubilant and uproarious story about the armistice following World War I and how the families on her Philadelphia block poured into the street and burned an effigy of "the Kaiser," among many, many other recollections. We will miss her stories.Mary was predeceased by her brother, Edwin Robb. She is survived by her sister, Christina Gibney, of Media, Pennsylvania ; a son, Philip Funk, Jr., and his wife, Jane, of Concord; a son, Ronald Funk and his wife, Nancy Bell, of Narvon, Pennsylvania; a granddaughter, Kathryn O'Donnell, and her husband, Troy, of Fairfax Station, Virginia; a granddaughter, Anne Funk, of Boston; a grandson, Andrew Funk, and his wife, Stacey, of Acton, Massachusetts; and six great-grandchildren: Patrick O'Donnell, Thomas O'Donnell, Ryan O'Donnell, Matthew Funk, Jonathan Funk, and Kaitlin Funk; as well as many nieces and nephews. All of us who love Mary are grateful to the staff of Presidential Oaks for their kind, gracious and competent care during the years Mary lived there. There will be no calling hours, and a private memorial for the family will take place in Pennsylvania at a later date. Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, 30 Pillsbury Street, Concord, NH 03301.
