->WATERVILLE -- Mary R. "Mae" Smith, 87, a former resident of Winslow for 56 years, most recently residing at Sunset Home in Waterville, passed away unexpectedly on March 10, 2008, with her loving family by her side.Mae was born in Van Buren on Oct. 16, 1920, daughter of the late Leroy Thomas and Henrietta (Thibodeau) Dionne. She was educated in the Madawaska, Maine Public School system and at Mount Merici Academy in Waterville, where she graduated in 1937. She then completed a business administration program at Bryant & Stratton in Boston the following year. In 1942, Mae married the love of her life, L. Aubrey Smith, in Madawaska. Following Aubrey's service in World War II and after five years living in Atholville, New Brunswick, Mae and Aubrey settled in Winslow where together they raised their 10 children.A devout Catholic, Mae was active in many roles at St. John the Baptist Church in Winslow. These included Eucharistic Minister, director of the Sunday child care program, and Pre-Cana marriage counselor. She also helped organize the annual Christmas festival, where she was well-known for her signature divinity fudge. She was active in the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Maine and was a founding member of the local Meals on Wheels program. During her long life she nurtured many cats, an exceptional rose garden, and a passion for news about her community. Well-known for her warmth and compassion, she loved nothing more than giving to her family and friends.A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mae leaves 10 children, 18 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren: son Robert Smith and his wife, Anne, his children Bobby Smith, Susan Boerstling, and Kimberly Smith; daughter Judith Daviau and her partner, John Brochu, her children Rob, Christopher, and Mark Daviau; daughter Anne Sinclair and her husband, David, their sons Michael and Matthew Sinclair; son Michael Smith and his wife, Nancy, their children Lauren, Rachel, and Stephen Smith; daughter Margaret Chin and her husband, Tom, their children Kevin and Kenny Chin; son Peter Smith and his wife, Carolyn d'Agincourt, their children Iris and Ben Smith-d'Agincourt; son John Smith; son Joseph Smith; son James Smith and his wife, Diane Tarr-Smith; son David Smith and his fiancée, Alicia Pernisi, his children Lily, Jack, and Hudson Smith; great-grandchildren Peter Boerstling, Aubrey and Alex Daviau, and Cameron Sinclair. She also leaves brother-in-law Stillman Smith and sister-in-law Barbara Smith, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, cherished friends and neighbors.Mae was predeceased by her husband Aubrey Smith; her parents; and sister Mildred "Boo" Richardson.Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Veilleux Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 14, at St. John the Baptist Church in Winslow.
