Mary Lynn McManus Mitchell passed away on August 19, 2009.A resident of The Rice Home in Columbia, she was born in Lancaster on June 15, 1920, the daughter of William Vandiver McManus and Dessie Jeanne Hegler McManus. Mary was a longtime resident of Greenville, where she and her late husband, William Charles Mitchell, raised their children and operated the family's businesses. Mary was devoted to her family. She loved people and never met a stranger. For many years, she owned and operated Mary's Record Shop on South Main Street in Greenville, one of the first record stores in the Southeast with several outlets in the Piedmont, where young people congregated and musical celebrities frequently visited. She loved her second home, C Flat, at Litchfield Beach, where she spent much of her time. Mary was a longstanding member of St. James Episcopal Church of Greenville, and later transferred her memebership to All Saints Waccamaw Episcopal Church of Pawley's Island.Predeceased by her husband of more than fifty years, Mary is survived by her son, William Charles Mitchell, Jr. of Greenville; and daughter, Jeanne Marie Mitchell Irvin (Wilmot) of Columbia; grandchildren, William Charles Mitchell III of Greenville, Wilmot Brown Irvin, Jr. of Charlotte, Mary Brice Irvin of Columbia and Ruth Foreman Irvin Bowers (Rob) of Charleston; great-grandson, Brice James Irvin; and loving nieces and nephew.A memorial service celebrating Mary's life will be conducted by the Rev. Robert G. Riegel at The Rice Home on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. Family will receive friends immediately following the service. The family deeply appreciates the loving care Mary received from the many caregivers at The Rice Home who compassionately attended to her in the last weeks of her life.
