WALNUT GROVE, N.C. - Mary Stuart (Hackman) Miller, 82, died Tuesday morning, February 12, 2013, after a brief illness, at Walnut Ridge Assisted Living. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Melody Ann Miller, and her spouse of over 60 years, Donald Leroy Miller. She is survived by two children, Donald George Miller and his wife Lisa and Kim Stuart Zwigart Stanard and her husband Charles; seven grandchildren, Katherine Brown, Vanessa Haythorn, Loretta Woodlief, Larry Zwigart, Betsy, Kyle and Lauren Miller; four great-grandchildren, Meredith Dover, Audrey, Nora and Sebastian David Brown. Mary was one of nine children and is survived by one brother and four sisters from the Wind Gap, Pa., area. Her husband, Donald L. Miller, was superintendent of Smithtown Central School District, N.Y., for 14 years and Granville Central School District, N.Y., for five years. They resided in Smithtown, Long Island, area for 20 years and Granville, N.Y., for five years. They retired and lived in Belmont, Vt., for 33 years. Mary had worked retail on Long Island, grew to manage five departments and was an assistant buyer for the retail department store of Abraham & Strauss. She was also a volunteer librarian in the Belmont Elementary School, enjoyed sewing and crafting with the local ladies guild, read extensively, enjoyed astronomy, nature walks and wild flowers. Both Don and Mary were originally from Eastern Pa. where the met early in life. Mary was born in Bath, Pa., grew up in Wind Gap, Pa., and graduated from Pen Argyl, Pa., High School where she was the drum majorette. They lived as a productive, happy couple for the remainder of their lives. A memorial service was held at the Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove, N.C., on Sunday, February 17, 2013.
