MORRISSEY, Mary ElizabethJuly 11, 1934 - July 21, 2014It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and friend Mary Morrissey. She was surrounded by her family who loved her dearly. Mourning her passing are her children, Billy (Wendy), Diane (Craig), Noreen (Randy) and Barry, her 10 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren, her brother Lew Thoreson, brother-in law Charlie (Roberta), sisters-in-law Betty and brother-in-law Larry, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends including Marlene Harrison. She was predeceased by her husband William John in 2004, and her parents Wesley and Gertrude Thoreson.Mary was born and raised in Edmonton, and attended Eastwood School. In 1954, she married Bill, the love of her life. She moved with her family to Winnipeg in 1963 where they lived for 13 years, before returning to Edmonton in '76. They built a lakeside home on Lac Ste. Anne where they enjoyed many wonderful years, before moving to Stony Plain and then Edmonton.Mary was a tremendous mother and homemaker. She loved her children and was very proud of them. She was a gifted seamstress, knitter and a tremendous cook. We will always cherish the many games of Gin Rummy which she enjoyed so much, and was very good at. She was deeply interested in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved to attend their many activities and events. She was adventurous beyond her years; she loved to travel, including Las Vegas, Hawaii, Victoria, Winnipeg, and New Zealand on a tall ship with her grandchildren.Mary had a great sense of humour, she laughed easily, and she loved to make others laugh. She enjoyed movies, sports on TV and current affairs. She also was a talented scrap-booker, a hobby she greatly enjoyed along with making puzzles. She had several jobs after her children were grown, which she greatly enjoyed and was consistently commended for the great work she did.She was a beautiful woman, inside and out, she was kind, gentle and friendly by nature. She inspired and amazed us with her strength, courage, optimism and complete absence of self-pity. She always considered herself lucky for having lived a wonderful life. Mary greatly appreciated the staff and friends at Bateman Manor. We would like to thank Dr. Melanie Currie, Dr. Charles Butts and his nurse Bhadra at the Cross Cancer Clinic, Dr. Voldeng and the staff at Norwood Capital Care especially Gwen and Shannon, for their compassionate care, and Reverend John Burrill of Highlands United Church. In May, Mary's family honoured her with a tribute dinner, and they are planning a private memorial gathering in the months ahead. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Ronald McDonald House in Mary's honour.
