Services for Mary Madden Hughes, 93, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel with burial in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Washington Street United Methodist Church Building Fund or a charity of one's choice. Mrs. Hughes family will be at the home of her grandson, 239 Delaine Woods Drive, Irmo, SC 29063. Mrs. Hughes, widow of Thomas Grady Hughes, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001. Born in Laurens County, she was the daughter of the late Rosa E. Mabry and Edgar D. Madden. She attended Erskine College, and taught school in the Laurens County School System. She attended Columbia Dental Hygiene School and for several years she was employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital as a Dental Hygienist. She was associated with Dr. George C. Hart of Columbia for 27 years, at which time she retired. She was active in Dental Hygienist and Dental Assistants Association for many years, having served as state and local presidents. She also served as vice-president, historian, editor of the Journal and secretary of the Association. She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church, the St. Andrews Senior Citizens Club and Erskine College Alumni Club. Mrs. Hughes is survived by her daughter, Mary L. Carnaggio Phillips of Columbia; grandsons, Joey and Tony Carnaggio, both of Columbia; and two great-granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.
