Mary Louise Smith, 80 YARMOUTH -- Mary Lou Smith, 80, died peacefully, surrounded by her children, on June 3, 2008, after a prolonged and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Boothbay Harbor, on March 3, 1928, the daughter of Victor Pinkham and Mary Albertina Stevens Pinkham. She was the widow of Kenneth Irving Smith Sr. who died on May 30, 2003. Mary Lou spent her childhood in Five Islands, along with her five siblings, Victor Jr., Cleon, Jeanette, Barbara and Sylvia. She graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1947, and remained in Yarmouth for the balance of her life, after her marriage to Kenneth. Her contributions to her community consisted of Music Boosters President, Junior Women's League, Twice Fifteen Club, Girl/Boy Scout Den Mother, Coastal Manor volunteer and as an employee in the cafeteria at Yarmouth High School. Many students will remember Mary Lou for her friendliness and humor, as she served their lunch. Her love of preparing a delicious meal for family and friends led her to create a small catering concern. No advertising was needed to drum-up business. Through word-of-mouth, her clients raved about the care of preparation and food quality she provided. Kenneth and Mary Lou enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in retirement, vacationing in several southern states during the cold, winter months in Maine. They also cherished peaceful Maine summer evenings, lakeside, being serenaded by loons. Mary Lou's unconditional love and commitment to her family and friends will forever serve as inspiration to her children: Kenneth Jr., Laura, Andrew and Tina, as well as her grandchildren: Adam, Kenny, Abigail, Jacob and Olivia. Her family wishes to acknowledge the staffs of Bay Square and Coastal Manor, in Yarmouth, Beacon Hospice, for their superior level of care. They deeply appreciate the love and understanding provided during the end stages of Mary Lou's disease. Visiting hours are scheduled for Friday, June 6, between the hours of 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A funeral ceremony, also at Lindquist, is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a graveside interment at Pine Grove Cemetery, on Route 9 in North Yarmouth. Afterward, the family asks you to join them for a reception also at the funeral home. The Smith Family has created a memorial of Mary Lou's life and it is available at www.mem.com.
