Mary Louise Haywood Davis - WINSTON SALEM, NC - Mary Louise Haywood Davis passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, June 3, 2010. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Archie K. Davis, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Holt Haywood, and her sister, Pauline Haywood. She was born in New York City on July 25, 1916, and returned to Winston-Salem with her family as a young girl. She attended the Kimberly School in Montclair, NJ, and graduated from Salem Academy and College in 1937. She was a long-standing member of the Home Moravian Church in Old Salem, where many of her ancestors originated. The Church was a deep and meaningful part of her heritage. She was a member of the North Carolina chapter of the Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Winston-Salem Junior League, the Winston-Salem Debutante Committee, the Twin City Garden Club, and several book clubs. She was widely read and well-traveled, with many and varied interests. In her later years, she enjoyed auditing classes at Salem College. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and good friend to many. She often said that the happiest time of her life was when she was raising her family. Her door was always open to friends and family, and her home was often a gathering place for her children's friends as they were growing up. She is survived by her brother Thomas Holt Haywood Jr. and his wife Nancy, of Palm Desert, CA. She is also survived by her niece, Samantha Haywood Boughal and her husband Steven of New York City. She will be greatly missed by her children and in-laws: Archie H. Davis and his wife, Sally, of Savannah, GA; Louise Bahnson (Bonnie) Bennett and her husband, Bruce, of Atlanta, GA; John Haywood Davis and his wife, Joy, of New York City; and Dr. Thomas W. Davis IV and his wife, Sue, of Winston-Salem. In addition, she was a wonderful grandmother to eight grandchildren: Archie K. Davis II and his wife, Anna, of Atlanta, GA; Julia Davis Morrison and her husband, Mills, of Savannah, GA; Molly McDonald and her husband, Jason, of Charleston, SC; Christine Gartland and her husband, Jeff, of Atlanta, GA; Kim Vinnakota and her husband, Rahul, of New York City; William Haywood Davis of New York City; Mary Burton (Buffie) Davis of Chapel Hill, NC; and Thomas W. (Whit) Davis of New Orleans, LA. She is also survived by six great grandchildren, The family will receive friends at her home from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Funeral services will be held at Home Moravian Church on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 10:00 AM, with burial to follow at Salem Cemetery. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to her wonderful caregivers: Vickie Cuthrell, Ashley McIntosh, Christy Maske, Gladys Gilley, and Cynthia Bradger.
