GRIMES Mary Loftin Grimes, 71, passed away May 2, 2005 after an extended illness. Born in 1933 in Nashville, Tennessee, Mary attended East High School and graduated in 1951 as salutatorian of her senior class. She immediately began her formal education, attending Vanderbilt University and the University of Pittsburgh. After pausing several years to raise two children, Mary resumed her college education in the 1960's. This yielded Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from Jacksonville University. She later earned a Ph.D degree from the University of Florida in 1976. She taught for several years at Fletcher High School, then became a founding faculty member at the University of North Florida College of Education and Human Services. Mary was a determined person with a lot of drive. She loved her family and friends and they felt likewise about her. She also loved classical and guitar music, gardening and travel. She had a special love for English Literature and visits to Great Brit ain. Mary is survived by her husband of 53 years, Thomas A. Grimes; three children Thomas L. (Karen) Grimes of Midlothian, VA., Jeff R. (Alison) Grimes of Jacksonville, FL., Michael T. (Yuli) Grimes of San Jose, CA.; seven grandchildren; mother Ruth B. Nelson of Hendersonville, TN and sister Helen Cornell of Nashville, TN. The family will receive friends at Arlington Park Funeral Home at 6920 Lone Star Rd. on Thursday, May 5, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. A chapel service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, May 6, 2005 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Albert L. Hicks officiating. At her rest, Mary will be cremated following the service. Following cremation, a private interment service will take place in the family plot of Arlington Park Cemetery.
