Avis de décès de Mary-Livingston Haden

Mary Livingston Haden, 90, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Deerfield Retirement Community, Asheville, N.C. Mary was the daughter of thelate Whitner Kilpatrick and Willie Cherry Livingston, and grew up in Greenville with her two brothers, the late Whitner Kilpatrick Livingston Jr. and the Rev. William Cherry Livingston. At a very young age she developed polio, but like most things in her life she transformed her experience with the crippling disease into a strength. Many people came informally to this "wounded healer" for counsel, advice, comfort and wisdom. She had friends from all strata of society-"Mary knew everybody." Mary was married to the late Robert Lee Haden. While in Greenville, Mary was President of the Junior League and a leader at Christ Episcopal Church. In 1947 she and her family moved to Hendersonville, N.C., where she became locally and nationally known for her church work. Several youth later went into the ordained ministry because of her personal and effective ministry as youth advisor and Church School teacher. Mary served on the Vestry at St. James Church and as President of the Episcopal Churchwomen of Western North Carolina. She was one of the first women delegates to the National General Convention of the Episcopal Church. For the last 18 years Mary has resided at Deerfield, where she was on the founding Board of Directors and where she authored The History of Deerfield. She was a lifelong supporter of Kanuga Conference Center, Hendersonville, N.C., where she served on the Board of Directors and in many other capacities. At the age of 82, Mary was awarded the Converse College Alumni Association Community Service Citation in recognition of her lifetime of service to the communities in which she lived. Mary's children are: The Rev. Robert Lee Haden Jr. (and his wife Mary Anne Haden), of Charlotte, N.C., William Whitner Haden of Durham, N.C., and Mary (Bunny) Haden Keenan (and her husband Dr. Bruce Stone Keenan), of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service with the Rev. Morgan Gardner, Officiant; the Rev. Gary Farmer, Preacher; and the Rev. Alex Viola, Celebrant, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Room at Deerfield. Inurnment will follow at Christ Church Cemetery, Greenville. In thanksgiving for Mary's life and in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Giles Chapel Fund, Deerfield, 1617 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803; or the charity of one's choice. - Arrangements are by Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center.
